3 Things to Do Before You Buy Betta Fish

I know, I know! You are all fired up and ready to buy betta fish, throw them in a bowl, and revel in their splendor. Well, there will not be that much splendor to revel in if you don’t do a few simple things first. And besides, you can extend your betta’s lifespan simply by following these three basic steps before you rush right out and buy betta fish.

1 – Buy Betta Tank and Supplies First!

People generally buy betta supplies after they have decided to buy a betta fish. They see a beautiful betta in a bowl, get the salesperson over, ask a few questions, and then say, “I’ll take him!”. Then they start asking questions about tank size, food, heaters, filters and everything else they will need. My friend, you will need to buy betta essentials and have your betta tank set up for at least 48 hours before you add your betta. When setting up a new tank, I do not even look at the bettas in stock. I get everything I need to have a happy, healthy betta and head home to set it up and get the water ready. Then, a couple of days later, I go on the hunt for that perfect betta.

2 – Betta Tank Size DOES Matter!

Even though betta fish can live their entire life in one of those tiny betta fish bowls, this will shorten their life dramatically. I can also honestly state that I have seen every fish that I transferred from a tiny bowl to a five or ten gallon betta tank become a whole new fish. Their colors will brighten tremendously. Their personality will develop in its unique way, and you will see a strong, healthy fish that interacts with you happily and daily. And if you ever plan on buying another betta, you can divide a ten gallon tank, thereby not having to purchase a new betta tank. Betta breeding is also made much more successful when you start with a five or ten gallon betta tank.

3 – Heat and Filtrate!

A sponge-type filter is perfect, because it allows good bacteria to develop in the sponge, and they help regulate ammonia levels. And a heater is definitely needed to keep that temperature in a nice 79 to 82 degree range. Make sure you buy betta heaters that have about 2 to 4 watts per gallon of tank size so it can keep up.

Betta Water – Proper Betta Tank Setup For Healthy Fish

Getting betta water just right is the single most important step to increasing your betta lifespan from the industry average of six moths to a whopping three to five years. This will insure proper betta temperature and water quality. This generally covers heating, water set-up, filtration and substrate (tank flooring) before introducing your fish. Betta water in the wild is generally clear to brackish, with little or no water flow. However, betta water in captivity is a whole different situation. A betta tank must be cycled to lower ammonia levels, kept at a constant temperature range, and have constant water changes to ensure a happy, healthy fish.

An ideal betta tank is a five or ten gallon low, rectangular shape. Bettas do not live in deep waters in the wild, so purchasing a deep betta tank is a waste of resources, and your betta will not fully use or enjoy his surroundings. Get a glass or acrylic betta tank, because these do not scratch or fade like plastic, and provide maximum visual enjoyment.

Purchase a water treatment kit at your pet store, follow the directions and get your betta water ready. It is important to let the water sit for 24 to 48 hours to allow the chemicals to affect the water properly. This will get the nitrates started that are needed in your betta tank to offer the best environment for healthy fish.

Substrate is an important part of betta tank setup, since it plays host to good bacteria that form in the tank floor and eat harmful bacteria and ammonia that comes from the fish’s waste. A medium size gravel is fine. I have found that sand, while beautiful in appearance, is much harder to clean, and can grow algae much more rapidly than gravel will.

Purchase a heater that has 3 – 5 watts per gallon size of betta tank. This will keep the betta water at the proper temperature, 78 to 82 degrees. Also get a temperature gauge to double check the heater’s readout.

When purchasing a filtration system, get one that contains some type of sponge filter. This is a great place for good bacteria to live, and help your fish ward off disease by keeping the betta water at a healthy level. Just as the bacteria in your substrate cleans the water, this bacteria polices the nitrite and nitrate levels in your betta tank, keeping them at an acceptable level.

Betta Nests – Mouth Brooder Or Bubble Nest Betta


Betta nests are created by the male of the species. There are two types of betta breeders, and those are the mouth brooding betta and the bubble nest betta. These types of breeding are very different, so different nests are built. These two types of betta nests have many similarities and differences. How do you know which type you have? Let’s take a look at the beautiful betta’s nest building habits.

Bettas that build air-bubble nests on the bottom side of the surface of water do so when water conditions are not rapid. In nature, if a betta gives birth in a fast moving stream or lake, they will keep the brood in their mouth, since the bubble nest would easily be destroyed by water movement. In the betta aquarium, however, there is generally not rapidly moving water, so the male betta will suck air into his mouth and attach a layer of saliva to this air. He then blows the bubbles out and they cling to the surface of the water. When the fry are produced, the male moves them to this nest, and will protect it aggressively, even against his partner.

Make sure that you have some surface plants for these bubbles to cling to should your male betta decide to go this route.

If the male betta feels threatened, or feels that the water is moving too rapidly, he will take the brood into his mouth, and hold them there for 7 to 10 days for the fry to develop. The bubble nest betta male may not eat during this entire time, and could begin to look sickly and thin. This is normal behavior for these fish when making betta nests. A dead giveaway that this is the case is that the male will generally back into a cave, or huddle at the surface of the water, with the female guarding him.

Regardless which of the betta nests your fish employs, a tight fitting cover or plastic wrap should be fitted over the tank to keep any cold air from reaching the surface. A warmer betta temperature is a must for healthy growth. If when the fry are young, they receive any cold air when they swim to the top of their aquarium, they can catch pneumonia and die.

These are just a few of the steps to take when breeding bettas, and an in-depth betta care manual should be kept on hands at all times to handle any eventuality.

What is the Perfect Betta Tank? Fulfill These 4 Requirements For a Happy, Healthy Betta


As you look around the pet store, you see plastic one gallon bowls, a betta tank that is curved in the front, some that are ten gallon, and all sizes and types in between. So why so many choices? What is the right betta tank for you? Let’s look at what the betta requires, and then we can make a selection from there.

Betta tank selection is generally made by the owner according to what THEY want, not what the FISH wants! This is backwards. If you want your fish to have a shorter lifespan than he could have, and live a less than full existence, then by all means choose whatever looks good to you. But if you want to provide your fish with the perfect betta aquarium according to his needs, then read on.

Your betta requires…

1 – A Low Wide Betta Tank

Bettas live in very shallow water. Purchasing a betta tank that is deeper than it is wide is a waste, he will never use all that space at the top. And it is harder for you to clean as well. Purchase a wide low tank, a ten gallon aquarium is perfect. There are tanks called “bow front tanks” that make ideal betta tanks.

2 – Very Little Room, Comparatively

Bettas can live a long, healthy, happy life in a betta house as small as two or three gallons. I personally use nothing less than a five gallon tank, and prefer ten gallons for maximum betta comfort. These larger tanks are also much easier to use, and attaching heaters and filters will not take up too much room. There is also ample room to add betta tankmates, plants and other “furniture”.

3 – 78 to 82 Degree Water

This means that a home that is too small for a heater is no good. It has to be big enough to house a heater that can keep him at a comfy 80 degrees or so. This also means a filter to move the water so there are no hot and cold spots.


4 – Fog and Scratch-Free Walls

Your betta wants to watch you. He wants to play with you, and perform for you, and he can not do that if he can not see through the walls of his tank. Besides, you want to see him and his betta tank in all their splendor. Choose glass or acrylic over plastic, because they will not fog up, get cloudy or scratch over time.

That’s it. Five gallon and up, low and wide, glass or acrylic and heated are the requirements for the perfect betta tank.
